Sample Question 1: Simplifying logarithmic and exponential expressions1 marks

Question

Solve the following equations:

(i) 22x+1−7(2x)+6=02^{2x+1}-7(2^x)+6=0

(ii) 32x+1+3=10 (3x)3^{2x+1}+3=10\,(3^x)

(iii) 22x−1+32=2x+12^{2x-1}+\dfrac{3}{2}=2^{x+1}

(iv) 7x=31−x7^x=3^{1-x}

Step-by-Step Worked Solution

(i) 22x+1−7(2x)+6=02^{2x+1}-7(2^x)+6=0

22x⋅21−7(2x)+6=02^{2x}\cdot 2^1-7(2^x)+6=0

21(2x)2−7(2x)+6=02^1(2^x)^2-7(2^x)+6=0

Let p=2xp=2^x

⇒2p2−7p+6=0\Rightarrow\quad 2p^2-7p+6=0

2p2−4p−3p+6=02p^2-4p-3p+6=0

2p(p−2)−3(p−2)=02p(p-2)-3(p-2)=0

(2p−3)(p−2)=0(2p-3)(p-2)=0

Either 2p−3=02p-3=0

p=32p=\frac{3}{2}

Or p−2=0p-2=0

p=2p=2

When p=32 ⇒ 2x=32p=\dfrac{3}{2}\ \Rightarrow\ 2^x=\dfrac{3}{2}

log⁡2x=log⁡(32)\log 2^x=\log\left(\frac{3}{2}\right)

xlog⁡2=log⁡(32)x\log 2=\log\left(\frac{3}{2}\right)

∴ x=log⁡(32)log⁡2=0.5850\therefore\ x=\frac{\log\left(\frac{3}{2}\right)}{\log 2}=0.5850

When p=2 ⇒ 2x=2=21p=2\ \Rightarrow\ 2^x=2=2^1

x=1x=1

Hence x=1x=1 and x=0.585x=0.585 (3.d.p)

(ii) 32x+1+3=10 (3x)3^{2x+1}+3=10\,(3^x)

32x⋅3+3=10⋅3x3^{2x}\cdot 3+3=10\cdot 3^x

3(3x)2−10(3x)+3=03(3^x)^2-10(3^x)+3=0

Let m=3xm=3^x

3m2−10m+3=03m^2-10m+3=0

3m2−9m−m+3=03m^2-9m-m+3=0

3m(m−3)−1(m−3)=03m(m-3)-1(m-3)=0

(3m−1)(m−3)=0(3m-1)(m-3)=0

Either 3m−1=0 ⇒ m=133m-1=0\ \Rightarrow\ m=\dfrac{1}{3}

Or m−3=0 ⇒ m=3m-3=0\ \Rightarrow\ m=3

When m=13 ⇒3x=13=3−1m=\dfrac{1}{3}\ \Rightarrow 3^x=\dfrac{1}{3}=3^{-1}

By equating powers;

x=−1x=-1

When m=3 ⇒3x=31m=3\ \Rightarrow 3^x=3^1

By equating powers; x=1x=1

Hence x=1x=1 and x=−1x=-1

(iii) 22x−1+32=2x+12^{2x-1}+\dfrac{3}{2}=2^{x+1}

Multiplying through by 22;

2⋅22x⋅2−1+3=2⋅2x⋅212\cdot 2^{2x}\cdot 2^{-1}+3=2\cdot 2^x\cdot 2^1

(2x)2−4(2x)+3=0(2^x)^2-4(2^x)+3=0

Let p=2xp=2^x

p2−4p+3=0p^2-4p+3=0

p2−p−3p+3=0p^2-p-3p+3=0

p(p−1)−3(p−1)=0p(p-1)-3(p-1)=0

(p−1)(p−3)=0(p-1)(p-3)=0

Either p−1=0 ⇒p=1p-1=0\ \Rightarrow p=1

Or p−3=0 ⇒p=3\quad p-3=0\ \Rightarrow p=3

When p=1 ⇒2x=1=20p=1\ \Rightarrow 2^x=1=2^0

x=0x=0

When p=3 ⇒2x=3p=3\ \Rightarrow 2^x=3

Introducing log to base ten on both sides;

log⁡2x=log⁡3\log 2^x=\log 3

xlog⁡2=log⁡3x\log 2=\log 3

x=log⁡3log⁡2=1.585x=\dfrac{\log 3}{\log 2}=1.585

Hence x=0x=0 and x=1.585x=1.585

(iv) 7x=31−x7^x=3^{1-x}

log⁡7x=log⁡31−x\log 7^x=\log 3^{1-x}

xlog⁡7=(1−x)log⁡3x\log 7=(1-x)\log 3

log⁡3=x(log⁡3+log⁡7)\log 3=x(\log 3+\log 7)

x=log⁡3log⁡3+log⁡7=log⁡3log⁡21=0.3608x=\frac{\log 3}{\log 3+\log 7}=\frac{\log 3}{\log 21}=0.3608

Sample Question 2: Rationalising surd denominators in algebraic expressions1 marks

Question

Given that log⁡2x+2log⁡4y=4\log_2 x+2\log_4 y=4,

Show that xy=16xy=16. Solve simultaneous equations.

log⁡10(x+y)=1\log_{10}(x+y)=1 and log⁡2x+2log⁡4y=4\log_2 x+2\log_4 y=4

Step-by-Step Worked Solution

log⁡2x+2log⁡4y=4\log_2 x+2\log_4 y=4 log⁡2x+log⁡4y2=4\log_2 x+\log_4 y^2=4 log⁡2x+log⁡2y2log⁡222=4\log_2 x+\frac{\log_2 y^2}{\log_2 2^2}=4 log⁡2x+log⁡2y22=4\log_2 x+\frac{\log_2 y^2}{2}=4 2log⁡2x+log⁡2y2=82\log_2 x+\log_2 y^2=8 log⁡2x2+log⁡2y2=8\log_2 x^2+\log_2 y^2=8 log⁡2x2y2=8\log_2 x^2y^2=8 x2y2=28x^2y^2=2^8 xy=24=16xy=2^4=16

Solving equations;

log⁡10(x+y)=1\log_{10}(x+y)=1 x+y=101=10x+y=10^1=10 x=10−y(i)x=10-y \tag{i} log⁡2x+2log⁡4y=4\log_2 x+2\log_4 y=4 xy=16(ii)xy=16 \tag{ii}

Substituting eqn (i) into eqn (ii)

(10−y)y=16(10-y)y=16 10y−y2=1610y-y^2=16 y2−10y+16=0y^2-10y+16=0y2−8y−2y+16=0y^2-8y-2y+16=0 (y−8)(y−2)=0(y-8)(y-2)=0

Either: y−8=0y-8=0

y=8y=8

Or: y−2=0y-2=0

y=2y=2

If y=8y=8; x=10−8=2x=10-8=2

If y=2y=2; x=10−2=8x=10-2=8

Hence (x,y)=(2,8)(x,y)=(2,8) or (8,2)(8,2)
